Over the past 50 years, the Gold Coast has evolved from a small beachside getaway to become Australia's sixth largest city, ranking as the most populous non-capital city in the country. Located within the bustling South East Queensland growth corridor, the Gold Coast is one of the fastest-growing cities in Australia, with a 5-year annual average population growth rate of 1.8% (higher than the national average of 1.5%).

The city's Gross Regional Product (GRP) has shown impressive growth, rising from A$9.7 billion in 2001 to A$15.6 billion in 2008—a remarkable 61% increase. Tourism remains the backbone of the local economy, with almost 10 million visitors annually flocking to the Gold Coast. However, over time, the economy has diversified beyond construction, retail, and tourism to include sectors such as marine, education, information and communications technology, food, creative industries, environment, and sports. These nine key industries have been identified by the City of Gold Coast Council as the foundation for the city's continued prosperity.

With a 5.6% unemployment rate—below the national average of 5.9%—the Gold Coast is demonstrating economic resilience and stability. The city's recent push for the development of its central business district (CBD) in Southport is also driving significant change, with the area designated as a Priority Development Area (PDA). This transformation is expected to create new business opportunities and attract further investment.

Looking ahead, the Gold Coast Economic Development Strategy 2013–2023 outlines the city's long-term vision for growth. Key areas of focus include innovation, cultural development, infrastructure expansion, workforce enhancement, and international competitiveness, ensuring the Gold Coast remains a thriving hub for both local and global business.
